Alumni Spotlight: Jake Mory
by Ashley Sipe
Jake Mory, a 2022 UNC-Chapel Hill and Brand Studio alumni, made the most of his time on campus by gaining valuable leadership experience.
Mory worked at 1893 Brand Studio for five semesters, where he held several different leadership positions. During his junior year, Mory served as a Project Manager for Alamance Community College, where he oversaw all work produced by Brand Studio for ACC. This allowed him to work in a more one on one environment with the college and manage assignments as they came through the Brand Studio.
“I still did a lot of campaign work, but I had more responsibility when it came to making sure everything was organized and all of our work got done on time,” Mory said.
During his senior year, Mory served as the Brand Studio’s Managing Director. In this role Mory delegated work to all four teams, edited client work and acted as a main line of communication between the Brand Studio and its clients.
One of Mory’s favorite projects he worked on was for Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws (EENP), a local business that trains service animals.
“I got to write about a great cause and meet service puppies before they got paired with their new owners,” Mory said.
Working with real clients was Mory’s favorite part of working at the Brand Studio. He loved to see the work he was doing as a student go out and be used in the real world.
Now, Mory is a sales representative for a cybersecurity company, Varonis, where he works with companies in Austin, San Antonio and New Orleans to protect their cyber data. Between meeting with new clients and attending marketing events, Mory gets to use a lot of the marketing skills he learned during his time at Brand Studio.
“I am able to write effectively and have meaningful conversations with prospects, two things that I got a lot of practice with at 1893.”
Mory advises current Brand Studio students to not be afraid to venture out, try new things and ask questions.
“You’d be surprised how willing people are to let you try new things, and that’s the best way to find more of your strengths.”
Lastly, Mory encourages students to network during their time at UNC. Staying in touch with people from UNC opens doors and increases the number of personal business connections you are able to make while still in school. UNC is a family, and many alumni would be more than happy to help out a fellow Tar Heel.
Mory said, “I am still meeting people at my company that are Tar Heels, and everyone wants to help each other out however they can.”
